Next MDVOAD Quarterly Meeting: Sat. June 11th

Will be held on Saturday, June 11th at the American Red Cross of Central Maryland Headquarters. Before the meeting, you are encouraged to attend ‘Shelter World’ – a 90 minute tour of the activities in a disaster shelter. All VOAD members who are attending should register by June 11 (Saturday). Please register by clicking here: http://www.datmd.org/Shelter_Exercise.php and selecting the 12 PM time slot. You will do the 90 minute tour (‘Shelter World’), enjoy a NYC sidewalk café Italian luncheon and then attend our quarterly business meeting. Thank you!

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming Annual Meeting of MDVOAD. This meeting will be held on Monday, December 13th from 2 PM to 4:30 PM at M&T Bank Stadium (Ravens Stadium). The Governor’s Office on Community Initiatives (GOCI) has agreed to host this meeting in conjunction with the Volunteer Recognition Dinner slated for that evening.

Following the MDVOAD meeting, we encourage you to stay and be part of the GOCI event.

Parking details are still being worked out, more details to come.

A request for RSVPs will be sent out to MDVOAD members soon, stay tuned.

Maryland Long-Term Recovery Planning and Working Session

Speaking from experience, one of the most critical elements in effective long-term disaster response is having a well organized and functional Long-Term Recovery Committee.

Baltimore County Public Safety Day, Sat., Sept. 11th 2010

This year marks the 6^th Annual “Public Safety Day” in Baltimore County. The Baltimore County Police Community Relations Council has announced that this year’s event will take place on September 11 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The public is invited to come to the Hunt Valley Towne Centre located at 118 Shawan Road, Hunt Valley, Md. 21030, to view high-tech equipment used by trained staff for safety at home, at work and at play. There are other demonstrations that will inform and entertain all who attend Public Safety Day. The following is a list of what to expect:

Police dogs in action

Tactical demonstrations

Police Marine and Aviation displays

Put-Out-A-Fire demonstration

Antique police and fire cars

Smoke House Fire display

Firefighters Rappelling

There will also be a kids’ activity area and lots more for everyone.

Information will be provided by Baltimore County Police and Fire Departments; the Baltimore County Volunteer Firemen’s Association; the Baltimore County Sheriff’s Office; the Baltimore County Office of Fair Practices and Community Affairs; and other local and state agencies.

In a message sent on August 20th, 2010 from Bob Leipold, the Executive Director of National VOAD:

The National VOAD Board of Directors unanimously agreed to seek out or create a National Donations Management Network (NDMN) that better supports the needs of our members, our donors and those we serve.

A subsequent message sent on August 27th, 2010 includes frequently asked questions. I strongly urge all Maryland VOAD members to read both the initial announcement and the FAQs.

Please realize that National VOAD plans to host meetings, conference calls and discussions related to this decision. On a statewide level, it will clearly impact our state and local planning related to volunteer and donations management.

The focus of Maryland VOAD is fairly straightforward: to promote communication, collaboration, coordination, and cooperation among agencies responding to disaster in our state. We hope that this site and our new forays into social media will help us do this even more quickly and effectively.
